Sonia W. Roth

October 30, 1938 — October 30, 2023

Sonia "Sonni" Roth, 85, of Wellington, FL, passed away on October 30, 2023. She was born on October 30, 1938, in Jamaica, Long Island. Sonni was a truly beloved wife, mother, grandmother, cousin, sister and friend. Sonni was a social butterfly with an ever-present sense of humor and unfailing grit. Despite a life long battle with COPD, when asked how she was feeling, she would always respond "terrific." She came from a long line of smart, strong women who loved each other fiercely. Sonni was a feminist, following in the footsteps of her suffragette grandmother. She had a successful career and was always present in the lives of her children, speaking daily with her daughters, as she did with her own mother. Raised in Vineland, NJ, Sonni and her brother grew up next door to their three cousins who were raised like siblings. Her grandparents' home and their family veterinary pharmaceutical business completed the block where her childhood home was located. She spent a decade on St. Croix in the Virgin Islands, before making her home in Florida. She had a close-knit family and passed on her love of family to her own children. Sonni is survived by her devoted husband, Steve Roth, and their three children: Alisa Bahl (Tracy Bahl), Adam Lamnin (Dawn Lamnin), and Naomi Roth-Gaudette (Sarah Roth-Gaudette). She was also a proud grandmother to seven grandchildren: Isaac, Jacob, Andrew, Harrison, Lauren, Avril, and Sylvie. Her brother Tevis, and cousins also survive her. Together, Sonni and Steve were wonderful parents and avid travelers who spent 50 years visiting over 90 countries. She inherited her love for cruising from her mother and went on countless trips, often acting as a host. Sonni had a passion for education and obtained a bachelor's degree and master's degree in education from the University of Miami. She started her career as a high school teacher in Miami, became a scuba instructor, went on to teach at the college level and served as the headmaster of the Academy of Learning. She pursued her love for travel by working as a travel consultant for three decades. Sonni was a five-generation life member of Hadassah and took great pride in her membership. She stayed involved with the Girl Scouts long after her daughters did. She found joy in her hobbies, which included travel, bridge, and collecting orchids. She loved to make chutney from her home grown mangos and even established her own "orchid hospital" to nurse orchids back to health for family and friends. A memorial service will be held to honor Sonni's life on Friday, November 3rd at 10:00 am at Palms West Funeral Home located at 110 Business Park Way in Royal Palm Beach, Florida. The family will sit shiva at Sonni and Steve's home at 10146 Dover Carriage Lane in Wellington, Florida directly following services, until 6:00 pm. Contributions may be made in Sonni's memory to Hadassah (Hadassah.org). Sonni will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Her legacy of love, strength, and humor will forever live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
