Robert Kenneth Sandberg

September 4, 1942 — February 25, 2023

Robert "Bob" Kenneth Sandberg, of Royal Palm Beach, Florida, died peacefully at home on Sunday, February 25, 2024. He was 81. Born September 4, 1942, in Brooklyn, New York, he married Patricia Anne Knowles, and they initially settled in Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey, where he was a volunteer fireman. Beginning at the age of 16, he was an extremely talented, lifelong union finish carpenter, eventually specializing in custom built homes on Palm Beach and along the shores of Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia. He was known to watch one thing on television while reading the paper or a paperback at the same time. He was adamant that his children attend college, as he had chosen not to, instead enlisting in the U.S. Navy, upon graduation from Park Ridge High School in June 1960, having been principally stationed in Key West, Florida, in the One Hundred One Fighter Squadron. He took vigorous early morning walks, kept his yard immaculate, followed his grandchildren in their high school sports, and in his later years enjoyed greeting the passing school bus and his neighbors from the tailgate of his truck, usually with a cup of coffee in hand. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert J. and Marie J. (Olsen) Sandberg, his step-brother, Kurt Alan Sandberg, and his wife, Patricia Anne Sandberg; he is survived by his three children: Denise Sandberg (Sal Sgroi) of The Acreage; Rev. Kevin Sandberg, C.S.C., of Notre Dame, Indiana; and Eileen Trimble (Rob Lawson) of Palm Beach Gardens; his three grandchildren, Jake (Jessica) Trimble of Tucson, Arizona; Rachel (Eric) Haas of Boynton Beach; and Dalton Trimble of Royal Palm Beach; and great-granddaughter Logan (with a second great-granddaughter on the way). His family is very grateful to the staff of the OneBlood blood donation center, where he donated blood and platelets every chance he got, in excess of 34 gallons, over the last twenty years. If desired, donate blood at OneBlood in his memory, or donations can be made to Quantum House (of West Palm Beach) or the Congregation of Holy Cross (U.S. Province). Friends are invited to a memorial gathering beginning at 6:00pm, with a memorial service from 6:30-7:00pm, on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at Palms West Funeral Home, 110 Business Park Way, Royal Palm Beach, FL 33411. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at the University of Notre Dame (Corby Hall) on Saturday, April 13, 2024, 1:00pm, with inurnment to follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery on the campus.
