Richard Allen Huwer was born November 21, 1943 at Gibbons Hospital in Celina, OH. His parents, Ralph Daniel Huwer, and Mary Helen Roebuck both from western Ohio. Richard attended grade school in the St Mary's School District ultimately graduating from St Mary's Memorial High School in 1961. While in high school, Richard played Offensive Guard (#33) for the St Mary's Roughriders. In 1960 he was drafted on the All-Western Buckeye's as an offensive guard and later as a tackle. The local paper wrote: "A great deal of the winning grid spirit generated by the senior members of the team can be credited to tackle Dick Huwer. Dick, an all-league guard last season, butt heads with the biggest linemen in the circuit, often outweighed by 100 lbs." Coached by Hall of Famer Skip Baughman, the Buckeye's won the championship. In June of 1961 Richard entered the US Navy as a Communications Technician and began his basic training at the US Naval Training Center in Great Lakes, IL. Richard was assigned to the USS Georgetown (AGTR-2) and continued his training at US Navy Submarine Base in New London, CT, NavComm in Pensacola, FL, Naval Intelligence School in Washington, D.C., and the National Security Agency (NSA) in Fort Meade, MD. November 1964, he completed his active duty as a Communications Technician 3 (CT3) and transferred to the US Navy Reserve where he served 3 more years and was honorably discharged in June of 1967. Richard married in 1970 to Carolyn Riddlehoover and would later divorce and remarry twice more. Richards spent most of his life working as a claims adjuster. He worked for and retired from Kemper Insurance Group and later opened Huwer Adjusting Services. He was an avid sports fan, he watched and read about the games, he loved the Dolphins and the Celtics Richard is survived by his two children Kimberly and Kristina, his six grandchildren, one great grandchild, three sister and one brother.
