John D Methfessel, Sr, of Edison, NJ and Atlantis, Fl, passed away Friday September 8, 2017 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital after a brief illness. He was born on Staten Island, NY on September 5, 1935 to Herman and Anna Consuela (MacDonald) Methfessel. He was married to Marilyn Taylor Methfessel from 1960-1986 and later married Susan Lubetkin on September 4, 1988. He graduated from Xavier High School, NYC, NY, moved to Florida where he was a dance instructor, then entered the United States Army in 1956 serving until being honorably discharged in 1958. He attended Seton Hall University and graduated from Seton Hall Law School in 1965. He worked his way through college and law school to support his young family. John worked for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company and Samuel Gennet, Esq in Newark, NJ. He was a founding partner of The Law Offices of Methfessel & Werbel in 1972. Together with his partner, Joel Werbel, they built their business to one of the highest ranked firms in the state New Jersey. John retired in 1995 with Susan and began to split time between Edison, NJ and Atlantis, FL. He spent much of his time golfing at The Atlantis Country Club where he was a member for over twenty years and was an avid fan of the New York Rangers. There was nothing he loved more than spending time with his family and friends. John was incredibly compassionate, had an incredible sense of humor and an infectious laugh. His generosity changed the lives of many as he donated to many charities. In addition to his loving wife Susan, he is survived by his brother and sister in law Edmund and Betty Methfessel, two sons, John D. Methfessel, Jr and his wife Kathleen of Tewksbury, NJ, Donald Methfessel and wife Maria of Branchburg, NJ, two daughters, MaryAllyn Baeslack and her husband Dennis of Dexter, NY and Julie Skinner of Easton, PA. John is the proud grandfather of 11 grandchildren and 2 great granddaughters. He is also a loving uncle to several nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his brother Herman Methfessel and granddaughter Claire Methfessel. A visitation will be held at Palms West Funeral Home, 110 Business Park Way, Royal Palm Beach on Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at 9:00 AM with a service at 10:00 AM. Burial to follow at Our Lady Queen of Peace Cemetery.
