John Anthony Matey, 93, of Wellington, Florida, passed away of natural causes in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family on February 5, 2020. John was born on August 8, 1926 in Luzerne PA, and is survived by his four children, daughter Diane and sons John, Michael and Paul, six loving grandchildren Danielle, James, Justin, Brandyn, Patrick, and Brooke and two adorable great grandchildren Abigail and Liliana, nieces, nephews and extended family. John was a proud and loving father, grandfather and friend to all who knew him. John served proudly in the U.S. Army during World War II 1945-1946 as Technician Fifth Grade Headquarters and Headquarters Company 544th Engineer Shore and Boat Regiment. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Army Occupation (Japan) Medal and World War II Victory Ribbon. Thereafter John worked tirelessly in his lifetime career as a machine shop operator and various construction and renovation specialties. John was a stalwart patriot and served as Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars National Veterans Service Program. He loved his family and friends, was always there to help and was deeply loved by all who knew him Words cannot express the family's love and appreciation to the people of Trustbridge Hospice of Palm Beach County whose compassion and care during John's final days will be remembered always. John will be laid to rest at the South Florida VA National Cemetery, 6501 S State Road 7 Lake Worth, Florida 33449 following a ceremony there commencing promptly at 9:15 AM on Friday, February 14th. An escorted procession to VA National Cemetery will commence from Palms West Funeral Home and Crematory at 110 Business Park Way Royal Palm Beach, Florida 33411 at 8:45 AM.
