Joey Hermida was born August 8, 1957 in Savannah, Ga and passed away on November 25, 2019 in Wellington, FL where he had lived for the last two and a half years. Joey was a painter by trade but at heart, he was a drummer. He loved music and learned to play drums on his own after receiving a small set when he was about 8 years old. He would occasionally sit in with local bands playing around Savannah. He worked at various painting jobs over the years doing residential, commercial and industrial projects. He spent several years working at Gulfstream where he really enjoyed finishing the specialty woods used in the private jets and also worked at Palmer & Johnson in Thunderbolt on yachts. He spent the last several years before his diagnosis with Early Onset Alzheimers working for a contractor at Hunter Army Airfield painting propellers for Apache helicopters. Other than playing the drums, I think Joey's favorite pastime was riding his motorcycle. He loved to ride down to the beach and to cruise downtown to City Market to listen to the bands. He always knew someone in the band as well as most everyone else he encountered down there. I don't remember going anywhere with him that he didn't find someone that he knew. Joey is survived by his beloved children, daughter, Sara Hermida, sons, Joe (Amanda), Chris, Matthew and Jake. He had three grandchildren, Olivia, Amelia and Luke, that he loved very much although his disease kept him from truly getting to enjoy them. He is also survived by a brother, Wayne Lumpkin, a sister, June Newsome and a brother-in-law, John Newsome who loved him like a brother and several nephews who loved him dearly. A memorial service will be planned for a future date. In the meantime, if you'd like to remember him, a donation to the Alzheimers Association can be made or just listen to some good music and toast him with a beer. He'd appreciate that.
