Celebrating the Life of Gloria May Bruce

“A beautiful life is not measured by the years it spans, but by the love it gives, the lives it touches, and the legacy it leaves behind.”

The story of Gloria May Bruce, affectionately known as “Miss Bruce” and “Miss Gloria,” is one of grace, courage, determination, and an enduring devotion to family. Hers was a remarkable journey that crossed countries and generations, yet wherever life carried her, she remained the humble, elegant, generous, and family-oriented woman her loved ones knew so well.

Gloria was born on August 15, 1940, in Pondside District, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, to Beatrice Satchwell and Norman Bruce. The eldest of her siblings, she attended Pondside All Age School and grew into a young woman whose beauty, poise, and confidence did not go unnoticed.

In 1960, Gloria proudly represented her parish as Miss St. Elizabeth, holding the distinguished title of parish beauty queen. While the crown marked a memorable moment in her youth, the years that followed would reveal that Gloria possessed not only outward beauty, but also intelligence, resilience, independence, and determination.

Motherhood became one of the most meaningful parts of Gloria’s life. She was blessed with three children: her firstborn, Ray Bennett, followed by her daughters, Sharon Mitchell and Jacqueline Lampkin.

In 1961, Gloria embarked upon a courageous new chapter when she migrated to England, first living in London before later making her home in Luton. Her daughters, Sharon and Jacqueline, were born during her years in England.

Determined to further herself, Gloria attended Barnfield Community College, where she studied Business and was the only Black student in her class. Particularly during that period, her willingness to pursue her education despite cultural and racial barriers reflected the quiet courage and perseverance that would characterize her life. She later worked at Vauxhall Motors, establishing herself professionally while caring for her family.

After fourteen years in England, Gloria returned to her beloved Jamaica in 1975, settling once again at her family home in Pondside. There, she shared her knowledge through education, teaching adults through JAMAL.

Gloria later lived in Black River and continued building her professional career. She worked at BRUMDEC in Santa Cruz and Jones Furniture Store in Black River, later transferring to the company’s head store in Savanna-la-Mar, Westmoreland. She eventually moved to Crawford District, St. Elizabeth, where she built her own home a reflection of the independence and determination that defined so much of her life.

Gloria’s journey eventually took her abroad once more when she migrated to the United States. She first went to New York, where she stayed with her sister, Dorothy Evans, before moving to Florida. There, Gloria continued her strong work ethic at Winn-Dixie, where she remained until her retirement.

Through every chapter; from Jamaica to England, back home to Jamaica, and eventually to the United States Gloria carried herself with a quiet dignity that was unmistakably her own. She was humble yet elegant, generous, fashionable, and deeply devoted to her family. She possessed a natural sense of style and grace, but beyond her outward elegance was a woman whose greatest treasures were the people she loved.

Gloria was the proud grandmother of Andre, Marlon, and Shaun Mitchell, and the proud and loving great-grandmother of Arianna and Jahmari Mitchell. She was the beloved sister of Dorothy Evans, who resides in New York, and Randal Blackwood, who predeceased her, and mother-in-law to Hurdley Mitchell.

On September 19, 2026, at the age of 86, Gloria May Bruce peacefully completed her earthly journey at Luxe Rehabilitation Center in Florida.

Eighty-six years gave Gloria many titles and many chapters. She was a daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, parish beauty queen, student, educator, and hardworking professional. She journeyed thousands of miles from home, embraced new beginnings, overcame barriers, built a home of her own, and created a life that spanned countries and generations.

But to those fortunate enough to truly know her, she was simply Miss Gloria.

Her journey carried her across oceans, but family remained her anchor.

Today, those who loved Gloria will remember far more than the places she lived or the positions she held. They will remember the woman; her humility, generosity, elegance, impeccable sense of style, strength, and unwavering devotion to family.

Though her earthly chapter has closed, her story continues through the generations she leaves behind and in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

Gloria May Bruce lived with grace, persevered with strength, loved her family deeply, and leaves behind a legacy that time cannot erase.

May her beautiful soul nestle in eternal peace.
