Frederick John Merkle, 76, of Wellington, Florida, passed away on May 7, 2026. A man of quiet strength, sharp wit, and unwavering integrity, Fred was a devoted husband, father, "Papa," and a distinguished veteran and law enforcement leader.
A Legacy of Service: Navy and Law Enforcement
Born on October 16, 1949, in Queens, New York, Fred’s life was defined by a profound commitment to his country and community. He was a proud Vietnam Veteran, serving with honor in the U.S. Navy as a Petty Officer and Gunner’s Mate.
Following his military service, Fred continued his calling as a protector in Florida. He dedicated his professional career to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, where he rose through the ranks to retire as a Lieutenant. Known for his fair leadership and dedication to the badge, he was a mentor to many and a pillar of the PBSO family.
The Call of the Outdoors
Fred was a true outdoorsman who found his greatest peace in nature. While he enjoyed the waters of Florida, he particularly loved hunting in Virginia, a place that held deep significance for him. Whether he was in the woods of Virginia or out on a boat, he cherished the patience of the sport and the camaraderie of the hunt.
Family and Heart
While his career was defined by service, his life was centered on love. Fred was the adoring husband of Joann, with whom he built a beautiful life and home in Wellington. He was a proud and steadfast father to his son, Rick, and his daughter, Dawn.
His greatest joy was his role as "Papa." He leaves behind five grandchildren who were the light of his life: Geo, Gianna, Genevieve, Giulianna, and Erick. He was their biggest champion, and his legacy of kindness and strength will live on through them.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the PBC Sheriff’s Foundation at PBCSF.org
