Edward Stecher, age 88, a longtime resident of Royal Palm Beach, FL passed away on May 11, 2018. Edward was born in Gloucester, MA and resided in Delawanna, NJ, Edison, NJ and Browns Mills, NJ. Edward enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1946 as a heating engineer on the USS Valley Forge. He pitched on the U.S. Naval Baseball team. On completion of his Naval duties he enlisted in the Merchant Marines. Edward was a member of the American Legion for many years. As a civilian, Edward worked in the Corp of Engineers in Fort Dix, NJ for 37 years. In retirement, he worked at Classic Desserts, in Browns Mills, NJ. Edward involved himself in the Browns Mills, NJ community in the mid-1970's as the Commissioner of PAL Baseball and managed several PAL Football teams. He had several articles published as the local sportswriter for The Burlington County Times-Advertiser. Edward was a passionate Cleveland Indians fan because of his great admiration, as a child, for the pitcher, Bob Feller. In 1993 he had the immense pleasure to have had dinner with his childhood idol, Mr. Feller. As well as, attending a Cleveland Browns football game with him at the old Jacobs Field. What an amazing and memorable weekend. Edward enthusiastically followed the New York Giants his favorite football team throughout his lifetime. Edward was an avid reader of U.S. history, biographies and novels. He also enjoyed reading the Racing Forum and going to the track. In midlife Edward built and raced stock cars. He began playing golf at the youthful age of 65. In 1999 at the age of 71, he won the "Most Improved Player Award" in his golfing league. He is preceded in death by his first wife of 23 years, Katrine L. Stecher (nee. McMahon). He is survived by this wife, June (Flowers, Hergert, Lyle) Stecher, his daughter, Kathleen S. Stecher, his grandson, Colin Greenman, his step-daughters, Maureen Solow, Donna Hergert, Lynn (Palush) Kelley, Betty Meyers, his step-grandchildren, Gregory Solow, Ryan Solow, Bruce Palush, Todd Palush, Jason McGarity, Kyle McGarity, Tayler Meyers, and six great-grandchildren. Edward was the beloved husband to both Katrine and June Stecher. He was a loving, honest, caring and moral figure to all who knew him. His kindness to both friends and family will be greatly missed. The family will receive friends at Palms West Funeral Home located at 110 Business Park Way, Royal Palm Beach, FL 33411 on Thursday, May 17, 2018 from 11:00am to 12:00pm. Immediately following, a memorial service will take place at South Florida National Cemetery, 6501 SR 7, Lake Worth, FL 33449.
