Donald L. Burke, 74, of Royal Palm Beach, Florida passed peacefully with his family by his side on June 10, 2025, after a long battle with lung cancer. Don, as he was known, or "Bunky" to his friends, was born July 3, 1950, in Baltimore, Maryland. He proudly served his country for two tours in Vietnam with the Navy on the USS Constellation. He married the love of his life, Gina Ferrandi on March 1, 1974, after a 3-month engagement. He was proud of his military service, but his greatest pride was his two sons, Christopher and Zach. He was a great father-in-law, accepting both Amanda and Kelsey into the family with open arms. His grandchildren brought him so much joy, and they will continue to adore him. Don never met a stranger and was a natural-born comedian. He had a heart of gold, loved his family fiercely, and treated friends like family. In the Navy, Don was an A6 Intruder Plane Captain, where his job was to inspect each aircraft prior to flight. He earned a commendation when he grounded a plane - a decision that ultimately saved the pilot's life. Don continued his love for aviation following his service in the military. He worked at Orlando International, Palm Beach International and Lantana airports. In true "Bunky" fashion, he joked with everyone he met throughout his aviation career. In his 50's he learned a new trade, working with CNC machines cutting steel. He was a loyal employee for 22 years before being forced into retirement by the cancer and consequential treatment. Don was involved in most activities that involved his family. He coached his sons in sports and later played with them. Billiards, softball, football, basketball, golf, he could do it all and passed the love and skill onto his boys. As a grandfather, he rarely missed a game, cheering them on and giving an encouraging hug afterward. Over the last decade, Don found his "happy place" in the Great Smoky Mountains and insisted on a family trip there every year. Don is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Gina, his sons Christopher (Amanda) and Zachary (Kelsey), grandchildren Summer, Annabel, Eli and Ethan, and many more loving family members. He is predeceased by his parents Phil and Jean Burke, his uncle Father William Burke, and many other aunts, uncles and cousins. A memorial service will be held June 27, 2025, 11:00 am at South Florida National Cemetery.
