Domenic A. Mattioli

May 8, 1927 — January 22, 2018

Dominic Albert "Matty" Mattioli, who served three terms as Mayor of Royal Palm Beach, Florida, died on Sunday, January 22, in West Palm Beach. He was 90 years of age. Matty and his wife Marion moved to Royal Palm Beach almost 40 years ago after Matty retired from the Corning company as a Regional Sales Manager. Mattiolli was born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia on May 8, 1927. He was one of six children of Daniel and Millie Mattioli, who emigrated to southeastern Pennsylvania from Italy. Following his high school graduation, Matty enlisted in the United States Navy and served through the end of World War II. He was part of the now vanishing "Greatest Generation." In his younger days he was an accomplished equestrian and officiated at Polo matches throughout the northeast and Mid-Atlantic states. Matty would then meet the love of his life, Marion Herman, and they settled in Laflin, Pennsylvania. Matty became active in civic affairs and served several terms on the Laflin Borough Council. After Matty retired, he and Marion moved to Royal Palm Beach, Florida. There the couple became very active in the community. Matty served as President of his homeowners' association and became active in civic affairs. He served almost twenty years on City Council before being elected Mayor in 2010. During his tenure, the Village of Royal Palm Beach sold its' municipal water plant to Palm Beach County Water Utilities District for a substantial amount of money. This enabled the Council to keep taxes low over the years by maintaining the corpus of the fund as an investment. As Mayor, Mattioli succeeded in bringing Aldi's Warehouse and other major businesses to the business areas of Royal Palm while maintaining the residential integrity of the Village. The capstone of his career was the completion and dedication of the Commons Park, a magnificent public park in the heart of Royal Palm Beach which is the centerpiece of this vibrant community. When he retired as Mayor two years ago at 88 years of age, Matty was honored with a testimonial tribute held at the Royal Palm Beach Cultural Center and sponsored by the Royal Palm Beach Rotary. The overflow crowd at the cultural center which included political, business and religious leaders encapsulated Matty's decades of accomplishment in the service of others, as well as his love for Royal Palm Beach. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marion Mattioli, in 2010; Brothers, Daniel, James, and sisters Jane Barberes, Phil Valentine, and granddaughter Lauren Kostelansky. Matty is survived by four daughters. Karen Rutty (John) of Pennsylvania, Lori Kostelansky (Ron), Pittston, PA, Sandy Loftus (Brian) Duryea and Mary Kay Gardner (David), Pittston. He is also survived by one sister Rita Mattioli of Bryn Mawr. Matty is also survived by twelve grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
