Dolores Hortensia Piedra (née Loret de Mola), 85, passed away on April 15, 2026.
Born on December 24, 1940, in Cuba, Dolores was raised with a deep sense of family, faith, and creativity that would shape every chapter of her life. She was the daughter of Hortensia de Armas and Rogelio Loret de Mola, and had one brother.
Dolores met the love of her life, Joaquin Enrique Piedra, in a way that felt destined. Joaquin, a literary critic and radio host, hosted a program where poets would call in for guidance. Dolores called into the show, and that moment became the beginning of their lifelong love story. They married in 1957.
In 1964, Dolores and Joaquin fled Cuba in search of freedom, first settling in Miami before building their life together in Colorado. There, they welcomed their two daughters in 1970 and 1971. In 1988, they moved to Boynton Beach, Florida, to remain close to their Cuban roots.
Dolores was a woman of extraordinary intellect, talent, and discipline. A poet at heart and an award-winning writer, she carried her love of language throughout her life. She was a teacher in Cuba and worked tirelessly to reestablish her career in the United States, learning English and continuing her education with remarkable determination. She earned her Associate’s degree from Arapahoe Community College and her Bachelor’s degree from Metropolitan State College, graduating summa cum laude with a major in Spanish and a minor in Art.
She was an artist in every sense of the word. Dolores painted, embroidered, and sewed, lovingly creating holiday dresses and every Halloween costume for her daughters. She was an exceptional cook and a devoted homemaker, known for keeping a spotless home and preparing four-course meals each night.
Dolores was deeply faithful, a devout Catholic with a special devotion to Our Lady of Charity. She possessed a profound emotional intelligence, an intuitive spirit, and a gift for understanding others that made her presence both grounding and quietly powerful.
Though private and reserved with the outside world, Dolores gave herself completely to her family. She was fiercely loving, deeply devoted, and carried a sharp wit that never left her, even in her final days, she continued to make those around her laugh. She loved language, especially idioms, and had a natural humor that brought joy to everyday moments.
She is survived by two daughters, her four grandchildren, and her brand new great grandson, who she dearly loved.
Dolores will be remembered for her strength, her brilliance, her creativity, and the unwavering love she gave to her family. Her legacy lives on in the lives she shaped, the beauty she created, and the stories she leaves behind.
Services will be held at on Friday April 24th, 2026. Her memorial mass will be held at St. Therese Catholic Church in Wellington, Florida at 1:30 PM. Immediately following the mass at 3:00PM will be an internment at Our Lady Queen of Peace in Royal Palm Beach, Florida.
She will be deeply missed and forever loved.
