Debra Elizabeth Edwards was born March 8, 1959 in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. She grew up in the Sangre Grande and Arouca areas where she enjoyed climbing trees and playing in the countryside. In her teenage years, she proudly attended Bishop Anstey High School, located in Port of Spain. In 1979, Debra moved to New York City, where she attended Pace University, earning her Master's Degree in business. In 1983 she married Paul Edwards, and shortly after the birth of their first child they moved to West Palm Beach, Florida, where the following years would bless them with two more children. Debra's proudest career accomplishment was the purchase of her business, The Beauty Institute, which she owned and operated for 23 years. During that time, she expanded the school's size, reputation and location (at one point operating in two counties) and provided cosmetology, barbering and vocational skills to countless students. She took pride in supporting students with various backgrounds, including veterans, LGBT, students with disabilities, and students seeking re-entry into the job force. She ran her school as a family, and encouraged all students to embrace each other's stories. Outside of The School (as it was always affectionately called) her prized possession was her home and garden, which boasted numerous antiques and an endless assortment of flower varietals, especially orchids. Not just a green thumb, she secured her certification as a "Master Gardener" in 2001. Carrying on her legacy is her loving husband Paul Edwards; her devoted children LaToya Edwards, DeVaughn Edwards and DeAundre Edwards; her beloved mother Wilma Phillips; her cherished brother Curt Phillips; her proud father Campbell Phillips; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and students which she will always hold dear.
