David Lee Shumate, age 87, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2026, surrounded by his family. Born on June 7, 1938 in Glen Jean, West Virginia, to parents of James Earl Shumate and Virginia Agnes Spradlin. David served in the United States Air Force from 1957 to retired on March 31, 1978. He then worked for the Florida Highway Patrol from 1980 to retired on June 30, 1998. David was a dedicated serviceman who loved both careers.
While stationed in Misawa Air Force Base, Japan, he met and married Kimiko Tainaka on December 9, 1960. They welcomed two daughters and remained married for 54 years.
David was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was also known for his dedicated work, loving nature, and everlasting sense of humor. He was a talented craftsman and enjoyed tinkering in his garage. David will be immensely missed, and he will leave a mark on us that will never fade.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Kimiko. He is survived by his brother, Mike (Gail) Shumate; daughters, Kim (Scott) Shumate, Sue Shumate; son-in-law, Andrew Brock; nephews Michael (Gabrielle) Shumate, David (Mary Lee) Shumate; grandchildren, Alex (Erin) Brock, David (Caroline) Brock, & Jost Rodriguez; and great-grandchildren Jack, Charlie, Sloane, Eliza, Benjamin, & Bridget.

In remembrance of David, a gathering will begin at 11:30am on Wednesday February 25, 2026, at Palms West Funeral Home located at 110 Business Park Way, Royal Palm Beach, Florida, 33411. Immediately following the gathering, full military honors will be held at South Florida National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation at www.t2t.org.
