Carl Melville Wells passed away peacefully on March 13, 2026, in Wellington, Florida, at the age of 86—departing this world the same way he moved through it: quietly, on his own terms.
Born May 25, 1939, in North Adams, Michigan, Carl lived a life that didn’t call attention to itself, but left a mark all the same. He was a soft-spoken man with a sharp eye and a steady hand—the kind of person who didn’t say much, but when he did, or when he created his art, it mattered.
Art wasn’t a hobby for Carl. It was how he made sense of things. Whether through painting, drawing, photography, mixed media, or digital artwork, he observed the world closely and translated it into color, light, and form. While the rest of the world rushed around trying to explain itself, he sat back and showed it instead. No noise, no pretense—just truth, laid down one piece at a time. If you understood his work, you understood him.
He also spent much of his life as an educator and art instructor, sharing that way of seeing with others. He taught not just technique, but patience, observation, and the courage to trust your own eye. The impact he had on his students—many of whom carried his lessons far beyond the classroom—is part of a legacy that will continue quietly, just like he did.
He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, the kind of steady presence you don’t fully appreciate until you realize how rare it is. He shared his life with his wife, Theodora, whose love and partnership anchored him through the years. His children, Aaron and Leah, carry forward that same quiet strength and creative spirit. And if you knew Carl, you knew he had a special place in his heart for his dogs—loyal companions who never asked questions and never needed answers.
Carl is survived by his wife, Theodora Wells; his children, Aaron Wells and Leah Monte; his grandson John T Monte; his daughter-in-law Donna Gipson; his son-in-law John Monte; and his siblings, Grant Wells, Geraldine McGiverin, June VanVoories, Janet Rodriguez, Joyce Dunham, Nancy Dunn, and Rose Wells. He is also remembered by extended family, friends, and anyone lucky enough to cross paths with him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth and Gerald Wells; his brothers Rex and Dale; and his sisters Vickie and Leah.
Carl didn’t chase the spotlight. He didn’t need to. He built a life out of quiet moments, honest work, and deep connections—and that turned out to be more than enough.
The world feels a little quieter without him in it. But if you look closely—in the right light, at the right angle—you’ll still see what he saw; in the way light hits a wall, or the quiet shape of something most people would walk right past.
Not a bad way to be remembered.
