Aston Glaves, 91, died on June 5, 2019 at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Palm Beach after a long illness. His memorial service will be held this Saturday, June 15, 2019 at Union Congregational United Church of Christ, 5088 Summit Boulevard, West Palm Beach, Florida. He chose to be cremated, which will take place some time this week prior to the memorial service. Mr. Glaves was born on September 30, 1929 in Santiago, Cuba to Clarence Glaves and Gladys Gibson. His family thereafter migrated back to Jamaica, West Indies, where he grew up. He migrated to America when he got the opportunity to go to Columbia University in New York City where he earned a Bachelor's degree. Aston Glaves had a successful career as a housing developer in New York City, where he was responsible for developing and coordinating affordable housing for hundreds of senior citizens. There is a building in midtown Manhattan that is named after him, Aston Glaves House. At one time, he also served as the Chairman of the New York City Rent Guidelines Board. Mr. Glaves married Vernice DePass and they had and raised two children, Howard and Sandra (a/k/a/ Denise). He also has four grandchildren, Jonathan, Danielle, Christina and Melissa; and five great-grandchildren, Avery, Anaiya, Sophia, Isabella, and Alicia. Aston and Vernice moved to West Palm Beach, Florida, when they retired, where he became a master bridge player. He was also very active in his church. Aston Glaves was very charismatic and loved by people. When he drew you into conversation, you knew his focus was just on you. He had a giant sense of humor and deeply cared about anything he committed himself to do. Mr. Glaves is survived by his wife, Vernice, his children, Howard and Denise, and their spouses, Maria and Ishmael, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his brother, Harold, and his niece and nephew, Dianne and Richard, his brother-in-law and neighbor, Rupert and his wife, Marsyl, and their daughter, Michelle, as well as many cousins and other in-laws.
