He attended Bohemia Elementary School where he completed the First, Second and Third Jamaica Local Exams by age 12. Assad graduated from Holmwood Technical High School in Jamaica and thereafter pursued a career in teaching. He obtained a diploma in teaching from the prestigious Mico Teachers College. He taught Mathematics at Mannings High School and DeCarteret College before entering the University of the West Indies, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Physics in 1965. After teaching Mathematics at Wolmers Boys School he returned to his alma mater, Mico Teachers College in 1969 where he taught Mathematics for ten years while holding the positions of Senior and Principal Lecturer and also Dean of the evening college. During his tenure he was awarded a National Science Foundation Scholarship to the University of Southern California, receiving a Diploma in Teaching in 1973. He further received a Master's Degree in Mathematics from the University of Central Connecticut in 1975. In 1979 he migrated to the United States and attended Columbia University from which he graduated in 1982 with a Doctorate in Mathematics Education, his dissertation: The Role of Mathematics Education in Economic Development. This was followed by teaching positions at local New York City universities including Pace University, Baruch College and Long Island University. He also taught for 29 years at LaGuardia Community College where he was Professor and Department Chair. He was awarded the status of Professor Emeritus on his retirement in 2012. He was the author of several published articles and co-authored several Mathematics textbooks. He made presentations and lectured nationally at professional conferences on issues relating to Mathematics Education. Assad was a member of the Mico Old Students Alumni Association (MOSA) and the New York chapter of the University of the West Indies Guild of Graduates, serving as President of the latter from 1992-1994. Assad was a political enthusiast and outstanding cricketer on Mico College's Evelyn Cup Team for three years. Assad John Thompson passed away on December 7, 2021 in Wellington, Florida. He was predeceased by brothers Lothian and Irving and sisters Mae, Avis, Icy, Pearl, and Sybil. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Millicent (m. 1961), his daughters, Althea, Michele and Nicole, his grandchildren, Jonathan Assad and Allison Goodison-Orr, sisters Thyce and Freida, and his brother Newton. He has also left several nephews, nieces and cousins to mourn his passing. May his soul rest in peace.
