John T. Whelan

John T. Whelan, 81, of Wellington, Florida passed away May 13, 2021 surrounded by his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Sharon F. Whelan (nee Parker), his brother William (wife Mildred) and sister Margaret (husband Axel). He was predeceased by his parents Mary and John Whelan. John had 12 nieces and nephews who loved him dearly and to whom he never missed sending birthday cards. John was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on March 8, 1940. He graduated from Ft. Hamilton High School. He proudly served for 7 years in the U.S. Marine Corps. and was deployed during the Bay of Pigs Invasion. After the Marines John started his career with Mohawk Airlines (which became U.S. Air) where he met his future wife Sharon. After being stationed in New York and Baltimore he was transferred to West Palm Beach in 1978. He was an Assistant Manager at West Palm Beach airport retiring in 1996. John then worked for the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office for 14 years. Realizing that life is better spent on the golf course and taking care of his yard he retired again! Besides being an avid golfer and gardener, he was an avid sports fan. John loved the N.Y. Mets, always rooted against the N.Y. Yankees, and still held a grudge against the Dodgers for leaving Brooklyn. John and Sharon loved to travel and made many trips to memorable places including Africa, Scotland and Hawaii. John had a strong and abiding faith in his religion. He was a member of St. Rita Catholic Church in Wellington for 43 years where he served as an usher. John will be greatly missed by his family and friends. A memorial mass will be held for John on June 4th at St. Rita Catholic Church at 10:30 A.M. followed by interment at the South Florida National Cemetery.
